Myanmar’s Military Urged to Exercise Restraint Amid Border Trading Town Loss

Mae Sot, Thailand – In a diplomatic effort to prevent violence, Thailand’s foreign minister urged Myanmar’s military not to retaliate after losing control of an important border trading town to opposition forces. The situation in Myawaddy, Myanmar, remains tense as guerrillas from the ethnic Karen National Union and pro-democracy People’s Defense Forces now effectively hold the town.

Since October, Myanmar’s military has faced unprecedented defeats at the hands of various ethnic fighters and guerrilla groups, following the coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. The recent loss of Myawaddy has raised concerns about potential violent reactions from the military, which could lead to a mass exodus of residents into neighboring Thailand and disrupt border trade.

Thai foreign minister Parpree stated that Thailand had engaged in dialogue with Myanmar’s military, emphasizing the importance of peace in the region. Thailand stands ready to facilitate talks between the conflicting parties to prevent further conflict and promote stability in Myawaddy.

Despite efforts to maintain peace, sporadic explosions were reported near the bridges connecting Myawaddy and Mae Sot. Such incidents have fueled fear and uncertainty among residents on both sides of the border, leading some to seek refuge in safer locations.

Amid the tensions, the Karen National Union outlined its plans to establish administrative structures in Myawaddy to ensure security, prevent illicit activities, and facilitate trade. The organization also expressed concerns for the well-being of residents on both sides of the border and sought cooperation with the Thai government and international partners to address humanitarian needs.

As the situation remains fluid, Thai troops are on high alert in Mae Sot, closely monitoring the movements along the border. Their presence aims to reassure local residents and prevent any potential infiltration by trapped Myanmar soldiers seeking refuge across the border.

The international community closely watches the developments in the region, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Myawaddy. With diplomatic efforts ongoing, the focus remains on de-escalating tensions and finding a path towards stability and security for all those affected by the recent unrest.
