Animal Rights Activists Demand Stricter Punishments for Perpetrators of the 68/853 Animal Cruelty Cases in 2023

VALLETTA, Malta- In 2023, a total of 853 reports of animal cruelty were filed, yet legal action was taken in only 68 of those cases, either in the form of an administrative fine or criminal action.

During a recent TV program, parliamentary secretary for animal rights Alicia Bugeja Said discussed a poignant case of animal cruelty involving a racehorse named Zodiaco, which tragically died in a severely emaciated state after being neglected by its owner. This case gained widespread attention after the story was shared by Korin Farrugia from RMJ Horse Rescue, where the horse’s dire condition was revealed and despite the efforts of volunteers and a vet, the horse could not be saved.

In addition to cases of individual animal cruelty, Animal Welfare rescued a total of 2,000 abandoned pets in 2023. The parliamentary secretary also revealed that a white paper aimed at regulating breeding is currently in the works, as she condemned those who abandon their pets.

Despite facing calls for resignation from animal rights activists, Bugeja Said remains in her position as parliamentary secretary for animal rights.

In light of these concerning statistics and cases, animal rights advocates continue to push for stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws and harsher penalties for perpetrators of animal cruelty. These efforts are aimed at preventing further instances of neglect and abuse toward innocent animals.

In summary, out of 853 reports of animal cruelty in 2023, legal action was only taken in 68 cases, prompting calls for stronger enforcement of animal welfare laws. This highlights the ongoing need for advocacy and regulation to protect animals from neglect and abuse.
